Abstract
Polymer composite materials are widely applied in the highly loaded assemblages and objects in civil aviation, shipbuilding, automotive manufacturing, etc. due to their low density and high physical and mechanical properties. When designing the structures from polymer composites, it is necessary to consider the presence of various external impacts, including low-velocity impacts, which may lead to the damage accumulation and significant changes in the materials properties. Prediction of the residual mechanical characteristics of polymer composites after an impact can be based on the phenomenological models that describe the properties dependencies on the initial impacts energy with a certain set of functions.
The authors perform assessment of various phenomenological models applicability for describing experimental dependencies of the residual deformation, strength and fatigue characteristics of polymer composites on the preliminary impact action energy. Requirements for the functions applicable to experimental dependences describing are determined. The article considers four phenomenological models with account for the impact sensitivity threshold existence and presence of the constant residual mechanical properties at high impact energies.
It was revealed that the four models being examined accurately describe experimental dependences of the residual strength, stiffness, and durability of laminated glass and carbon fiber reinforced plastics on the energy of the preliminary low-velocity impacts. Of the models examined, the modification of the J.M. Koo model demonstrated the best descriptive ability and most adequately predicted transition to the stage of the minimum mechanical properties achieving. However, in case of a smooth change in mechanical characteristics without the evident impact sensitivity threshold, it is rational to apply the authors’ model based on the arctangent function. Durability exhibited the greatest sensitivity to impacts among the properties being examined, strength exhibited an intermediate sensitivity, while stiffness exhibited the least sensitivity. The nature of the strength dependence on impact energy may differ herewith under tension and compression.
Thus, an inference can be made on the phenomenological models application practicality to describe dependencies of residual mechanical properties of the polymer composites on the preliminary impact action energy.
